You know that thing I do, where I photograph a session and blog it a few years later? Yes. Well, I'm not doing that today. This wintery, hot chocolatey, Christmas Gastown family session just happened a few weeks ago. And I love it.

November isn't usually my favourite, because it's a little bit like Narnia, when it was always Winter and never Christmas (except in Vancouver's case, it's always Rain and never Christmas). But occasionally, this month startles me with beauty, and this time the combination of winter & fall, with colourful leaves and blustering wind and thick winter coats, was completely magical.

(Side note, because I know you love it as much as I do: Averi's little outfit is from Leuie, which is very possibly the most adorable children's shop ever.)

Until a few months ago, we lived in a tiny one-bedroom apartment next to the beach in Kits, and we loved it so so much. We decided we wouldn't leave until we found a place we could love just as much. So when I saw the rental ad on craigslist for a tiny white and red house with a backyard and windows everywhere, my heart jumped just a little bit, and we spent weeks dreaming about it before we finally signed the lease. This little house is everything we were looking and praying for, and yes - we love it so so much.

I decided to document our new place from Matthias' perspective.

I am in love with Tower Beach and photographing family sessions there - even if I experience momentary regret when the session is over, and it's time to walk back up several hundred stairs. It's still so worth it.

Leana is the most incredible mother, and these two are simply a joy to photograph - they have such an obvious bond, built on trust, and adventure, and silliness too. As I've photographed them together over the years, I've seen her daughter grow into such a wonderful little girl  - curious and goofy, sweet and ridiculous, and with such a desire to learn about everything in the world around her. I know this is due entirely to her amazing mom, who pauses in the middle of the session to describe the trees surrounding them, who challenges her to take risks, who teaches her to care for even the small creatures on their pathway, who comforts her at the end of the evening when she stumbles on a pebble, and who tickles her until they're both nearly crying of laughter.

I have so much love for this sweet little family of two.

I was thrilled when Wheat Canada asked me to be one of their storytellers, because this Canadian company stands for so many things I love. Their children's clothing brand is not about perfectly styled images of spotless clothing in a spotless environment, but rather about letting children live in their clothes, have fun in their clothes, get messy, run, tumble in their clothes. Their vision gave me the freedom to capture childhood as I know it really is - mud splashes and all.

Speaking as a mother, as well as a photographer, I am absolutely in love with everything Wheat makes. Their clothing is so comfortable, so well-made and designed, and basically completely adorable. I want to purchase every item on their website, in every possible size, and I very much wish I had a little girl so I could buy all the girls' clothing as well.
